UNAM students celebrate Thanksgiving Day celebration at the University of Massachusetts

Every year, Thanksgiving is celebrated in the United States, on the 4th Thursday of November. It is a tradition present in New England; some say it is older than the Republic. A day to look at the past, remember with affection, and do a so necessary activity in our lives: to give thanks.

The UNAM-Boston team participated in the Thanksgiving dinner organized by the University of Massachusetts in Boston (UMass Boston). Amid laughter, turkey, cranberry sauce, apple cider, and different flavors of pie, the UNAM fellows who carry out professional internships at the Center, as Mexican pilgrims, were able to enjoy this symbolic tradition in the company of the UMass Boston community, the Most diverse university in the New England region.

The most popular known story of this celebration relates that around the 17th century a ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, with the dream of finding a new home in British North America. They travelled for months and made landfall in early November. However, they did not imagine the impact that the First Winter would have on them, it had fatal consequences and more than half of them died. It wasn't until March that this story takes an unexpected turn. The pilgrims met two natives, Samoset and Squanto. Samoset learned English from sailors who had constant trips to Maine, and Squanto was made a slave by the English, but he managed to escape and return to his homeland. They taught them to seek resources in the area and to grow corn, it was thanks to these teachings that the settlers were able to survive the following winters.

In the first harvest they met to enjoy the fruit of their work, even natives participated who shared deer for dinner. This example of community and help is something that to this day is still remembered as Thanksgiving. It was until 1789 that George Washington declared the first national celebration of the same, and it was Abraham Lincoln in 1863 who declared that it would be in November of each year, and since then it has been repeated every fall.
