UNAM students will conduct their professional internships remotely with UNAM-Boston

Given the current conditions of social distancing caused by the spread of COVID-19 and with the interest of promoting the prompt qualification of students of the University, the Headquarters of UNAM in Boston, in coordination with the Faculty of Law, adapted the option of degrees for participating in professional practices at UNAM Headquarters abroad so that outstanding graduates can take advantage of this project remotely.

The following presents the testimonies from two Faculty of Law students, Bianca Velasco and Larry Murillo, who have been accepted by UNAM-Boston to pursue this opportunity.

Larry Murillo:

Doing my professional internship as a form of degree at UNAM-Boston is an opportunity to be able to contribute a little to the University, while learning a little more about the activities and functions of the Center for Mexican Studies abroad. For me it means being able to contribute to the academic work, not only of UNAM but all of Mexico, since I have seen that in this institution, high level academic content is produced with an international scope. It also means supporting more people, particularly alumni of UNAM, to learn about the activities of UNAM-Boston CEM, and to participate in the academic offers that are available here. In addition, it has been extremely satisfying to contribute to the strengthening and creation of new academic and institutional relations at our University. Furthermore, it has allowed me to learn from a variety of topics, while I practice my English, and I develop some organizational skills. Thanks to the kindness and flexibility of the UNAM-Boston Team, I have been able to make the most of this great opportunity, as I have been able to meet various academics of international stature.

Bianca Velasco:

Being a UNAM student and also having the opportunity to participate in a professional internship constitutes a form of personal fulfillment that is very important. The influence of the university goes beyond an academic aspect, as it does not exhaust itself in higher education and professional success. The privilege of being a university scholar means to understand at first-hand the reality of a diverse and complex country, that opens up like a new world before the eyes of anyone who enters the grand community, in the many ways possible, contemplated by UNAM. This privilege in addition to being free is the most important engine of change and social mobility that Mexico has. Now, those of us who also had the opportunity to make some academic stay in another country, we have a double privilege, which again crosses borders, and expands even more, the already diverse vision of the world. But these privileges that derive in empathy and better understanding of differences carry a great responsibility. First to congruence, that is to say, to protect these concepts as principles of life, and secondly, to the action of serving others, but, above all, those who, even without enjoying it, with their work, make university education possible: public, free, secular and quality; I mean the vast majority of Mexicans.
